Did Yeshua Claim to be the Messiah?

All "Son of Man" Passages

Anytime Yeshua called Himself the "Son of Man," that was a claim to being the Messiah, a reference to Daniel 7:13-14 which says:

"In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed."
The "kingdom that will never be destroyed" is a reference to God's covenant with King David (2 Samuel 7:16). A son of David would be on the throne in Jerusalem forever. Messiah would be Son of God, Son of Abraham, Son of David, and Son of Man.

Compare the above with the following words from Yeshua:

"For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done." (Matthew 16:27)

"At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory." (Matthew 24:30)

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory." (Matthew 25:31)

"If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels." (Luke 9:26)

"You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." (Luke 12:40)

"For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other." (Luke 17:24)

"I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." (John 1:51)

(Other notable "Son of Man" passages: Revelation 1:13, 14:14; Acts 7:56; and Psalm 80:17.)

"Son of Man" Used More Often Than Any Other Term

Yeshua used the term "Son of Man" for Himself many times. It was His favorite term for Himself. While some of these references may be duplicates, here is the number of times He used the term in each Gospel in the B'rit Chadashah: Matthew - 29 times; Mark - 14 times; Luke - 25 times; John - 10 times.

"Son of Man" Synonymous with "Messiah"

In Matthew 24:23-27, Yeshua made it clear that to Him the terms "Messiah" and "Son of Man" were synonymous:

"At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect--if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time.

"So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the desert,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man."

Yeshua to the Sanhedrin (Matthew 26:63-65):

But Yeshua remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God."

"Yes, it is as you say," Yeshua replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."

(Note how this ties in with the "Son of Man" theme, and how "Son of Man," "Messiah" and "Son of God" are all synonymous.)

Yeshua to the Samaritan Woman (John 4:25-26):

The woman said, "I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."

Then Yeshua declared, "I who speak to you am he."

Yeshua to the Disciples (Matthew 16:15-16, 20):
"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"

Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Yeshua to the Disciples (Matthew 23:8-10):
"But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Messiah."

Yeshua to the Disciples (Matthew 24:4-5):
Yeshua answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah,' and will deceive many."

Yeshua to the disciples (Mark 9:41):
"I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Messiah will certainly not lose his reward."

Yeshua to the Two on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:25-26):
He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"

Yeshua to the Disciples (Luke 24:44-48):
He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."

Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things."

Yeshua to Religious Leaders (John 10:24-26):
The Judeans gathered around him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly."

Yeshua answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, but you do not believe."
