Hebrew Education Vision Statement

Course Descriptions

CHILDREN

Aleph Katan
Prerequisite: Grades K-1
Students will become familiar with the Hebrew Alef-Bet’s letters and vowels. They will practice single-syllable letter-vowel combinations and systematically practice letter-to-sound and vowel-to-sound relationships.  Students may re-enroll in this class for two consecutive semesters as the curriculum alternates each semester.

Shalom Alef
Prerequisite:  Grade 2,children must be able to read
This Pre-Primer course will introduce 2nd grade students to the Hebrew Alef-Bet.  Decoding skills and recognition exercises are introduced to help students remember the individual letters and vowels.  Students may re-enroll in this class for two consecutive semesters as the curriculum alternates each semester.

Aleph Bet
Prerequisite: 3rd grade – age 11
Students in grades 3+ will learn visual and auditory discrimination of the Hebrew Alef-Bet letters. They will learn to write in block and script and practice blessings, prayers, Hebrew songs, and the Four Questions from the Pesach Seder.  Class size is limited to 16 students.

Shalom Ivrit 1
Prerequisite: Children’s Alef Bet
Students encounter Hebrew as a living language by building on their everyday and holiday experiences, at home and in school. Students will learn 160 key words and an additional 90 holiday and enrichment words, as well as comprehension and language skills. 

Shalom Ivrit 2
Prerequisite: Shalom Ivrit 1
Students acquire 151 new words and develop their language and comprehension skills. They learn to understand increasingly difficult and complex stories, and also to conduct simple conversations in Hebrew. 

Shalom Ivrit 3
Prerequisite: Shalom Ivrit 2
Students acquire 190 new words and will have fun learning about Israel in Hebrew.  This interdisciplinary approach provides students with an enriched, dynamic learning experience while developing their language and comprehension skills. They will learn to understand increasingly difficult and complex stories, and also to conduct simple conversations in Hebrew.

T’filah & Torah
Prerequisite:Shalom Ivrit 3
This class is designed to prepare the student for his/her bar/bat mitzvah by introducing the prayers of the Jewish worship service and Torah study skills.  The torah service and etiquette will be reviewed as well as reading the Torah script without vowels.

Cantillation Tutorial
Prerequisite: Torah Appreciation or Shalom Ivrit 2
Students will learn the cantillation of their specific Torah portion with the help of a tutor assigned by the Hebrew Dept.  Enrollment does not guarantee the date of aliyah to the Torah. Children’s Bar/Bat mitzvah ceremony dates must be arranged directly with Shaul Katzav.

 

ADULTS/YOUTH 12+

Aleph Bet*
Prerequisite: None
Students with no previous Hebrew exposure will learn phonetic Hebrew reading, script writing, and a basic Hebrew vocabulary of 100 words.  Class size is limited to 30 students.

Prayers & Blessings*
Prerequisite: Aleph Bet Adults & Youth 12+
This is an introductory class to prepare the beginning Hebrew student to fully participate in the Baruch HaShem Shabbat service with Hebrew literacy and comprehension. Students will be given a brief review of the history, origin and significance of the prayers and blessings that are chanted in the BHS Messianic Jewish worship service.

Biblical Hebrew 1* (Adults Only)
Prerequisite: Prayers & Blessings
This class is a simple, straightforward one semester course for students to learn grammar rules that will enable them to understand most biblical texts.

Biblical Hebrew 1A & 1B * (Adults and Youth 12+ )
Prerequisite for 1A: Prayers & Blessings
Prerequisite for 1B: Biblical Hebrew 1A
This class will progress at a slower pace and will be spread out over two semesters.   This format will allow more time for questions and individual attention.  There will be no tuition charge for the second semester of this class.

Biblical Hebrew 2*(Adults Only)
Prerequisite:Biblical Hebrew 1 (or 1A and 1B)
This class is a continuation of Biblical Hebrew 1. The student can expect to expand his/her knowledge of grammar rules and application, vocabulary, fluency in reading, and proper translation skills.  This is a fast paced class for students who easily grasped the concepts of Biblical Hebrew 1 and who want to progress at an accelerated level in one semester.

Biblical Hebrew 2A &2B * (Adults and Youth 12+ )
Prerequisite for 2A:Biblical Hebrew 1 (or 1A and 1B)
Prerequisite for 2B: Biblical Hebrew 2A
This class will progress at a slower pace and will be spread out over two semesters.  This format will allow more time for questions and individual attention.  There will be no tuition charge for the second semester of this class.

Torah Appreciation*
Prerequisite: Biblical Hebrew 2
Students will learn about the Torah Service – its history, meaning, and protocol. Students will also be introduced to the art of Torah cantillation and basic translation tools.

Biblical Hebrew 3
Prerequisite:Biblical Hebrew 2
This class is an advanced level of Biblical Hebrew.   The student will learn additional verb forms and build a vocabulary of words found in the Tanach. This is a fast paced class for students who easily grasped the concepts of Biblical Hebrew 2 and who want to progress at an accelerated level.


*Required course for Adult B’nei Mitzvah Students

Childcare Services will be provided for children ages (0 – 7) of Hebrew students during the Sunday morning classes. The Parent must be a Hebrew student and remain onsite at Baruch HaShem in order to use this service. Older children must be directly supervised by Parent or enrolled in a Study Hall. Children will not be permitted to wander the halls or the atrium area during Hebrew School classes without parental supervision.
